Saturday, June 2, 2012  - Bonticou Crag

Rock Scramble

Meet at Rock & Snow, 44 Main Street, New Paltz
Arrive 9:00 am, Return by 1:00 pm

Gather your friends or come alone and make new friends on this exciting rock scramble up Bonticou Crag, an amazing rock outcropping on the northernmost section of the Shawangunk Ridge.  From the top of this rock, we will see a 360 degree view and look down on the town of New Paltz and out to the surrounding Catskill Mountain peaks. If you haven't ever climbed up Bonticou Crag, you are missing out and this is your opportunity to see what everyone is talking about. This is hands-down the BEST half-day hike in the New Paltz, NY area.

This is a strenuous half-day hike. Minimum of three participants are needed to offer, hike will be limited to eight people. Only first eight to register will be accepted. Hiking will be 2 to 3 hours time, with an extra hour break in the middle up top for lunch to enjoy the view. If we are lucky the mountain laurel might be in bloom. Typically it blossoms in early June and peaks around June 10th. Given the warmer than normal weather we have experienced it is possible it will blossom earlier than expected. Whether or not the laurel is in full blossom, we are guaranteed to see some wild plants and critters that don't frequent the downtown scene.

To register, mail check payment in the amount of $53 per person (only $41 if you are a current Mohonk Preserve member) and 2 required forms (Assumption of Risk & Medical History Questionnaire) to Edgewood Consulting & Services, PO Box 122, New Paltz, NY 12561. Check should be made out to "Edgewood Consulting & Services" with the memo reading "Hike 6/2/12". Both forms may be downloaded off the website "Forms" page: http://edgewoodcs.com/forms.html Registration forms and payment must be received before May 29th.

Children under 18 are welcome but they must be accompanied by an adult on the hike and parent or legal guardian must sign their forms.  Wear good close-toed shoes (sneakers or boots), comfortable clothes and sunscreen. Dress for the weather, bring plenty of water, snacks and bag lunch.  Don't forget your camera and a small day backpack to carry your items; you'll definitely need your hands to be free for use on the rock scramble portion of the hike!

If you wish to hike but don't know who to go with or where to go, this is your opportunity to get outdoors on trail and have those stresses removed. If you are seeking a real physical challenge, this is it. Hope you'll join us!

Monday, June 11, 2012  - Bonticou Crag

via Carriage Roads  & Wooded Trail

Meet at Rock & Snow, 44 Main Street, New Paltz
Arrive 10:00 am, Return by 2:00 pm

Hike up Bonticou Crag, an amazing rock outcropping on the northernmost section of the Shawangunk Ridge.  From the top of this rock, we will see a 360 degree view and look down on the town of New Paltz and out to the surrounding Catskill Mountain peaks. If you haven't ever climbed up Bonticou Crag, you are missing out and this is an opportunity to see what everyone is talking about. This is really the BEST half-day hike in the New Paltz, NY area.

This is a moderate half-day hike; we will use a mixture of carriage roads and wooded paths to go up on top of the rock crag. We will NOT climb the rock scramble on this hike. Three participants are needed to offer the hike, hike will be limited to eight people. Only first eight people to register will be accepted. Hiking will be 2 to 3 hours time, with an extra hour break in the middle up top for lunch to enjoy the view. If we are lucky the mountain laurel might be in bloom. Typically it blossoms in early June and peaks around June 10th. So there is a good chance the laurel will be in full blossom. Whether or not the laurel is in full blossom, we are guaranteed to see other nifty wild plants and animals along the journey.

Dress for the weather, bring plenty of water, snacks and bag lunch.  Don't forget your camera and a small day backpack to carry your items, you'll definitely want your hands free on uphill sections of this hike!

If you wish to hike but don't know who to go with or where to go, this is your opportunity to get outdoors on trail and have those stresses removed. If you are interested in hiking up Bonticou for the amazing view but are too nervous to attempt the rock scramble, then this is the hike for you. Hope you'll join us!

Special notes: Refunds cannot be given for cancellations made two weeks or less prior to the hike. And, hikes are weather dependent. In the event of a light rain, we can still go but the guide reserves the right to change the route if conditions are dangerous on the originally planned trail. If there is a good chance of an electrical storm (lightening/thunder), the hike may be canceled and rescheduled for a future date. This is for your safety. We of course wish for bright and sunny weather, but realistically the guide cannot control the weather and nature can look beautiful in almost any weather condition.  Bottom line, as long as it is safe and won't be miserable, we'll go, otherwise we'll reschedule for a future day and time. Call ahead if you have any doubt as to whether the hike will proceed.
