Driving Directions to New Paltz, NY & Local Hiking Areas

 

Driving to New Paltz, NY

New Paltz is located 90 miles northwest of New York City and 70 miles south of Albany, New York. The easiest way to get here is to take The New York State Thruway (I-87) north from NYC or south from Albany to Exit 18, New Paltz.

 

MOHONK PRESERVE HIKING AREAS

- Butterville Road/Duck Pond

From the I-87 Thruway, get off at Exit 18 New Paltz. After the toll plaza, turn Left at the first traffic light. Drive through the village of New Paltz on Route 299 west and keep going on Rt. 299. Once out of town, just after driving past the Gilded Otter Brewery and across the green steel bridge, turn Right onto Springtown Road.  Go about ¼ mile and veer left onto Mountain Rest Road.  Go about one mile to the stop sign and turn Left onto Butterville Road.  Drive for one mile on Butterville Road and pull off and park your car off to the right-hand side immediately before the overhead bridge.  You’ll essentially park your vehicle on the side of Butterville Road close by the intersection with Lenape Lane. (Lenape Lane intersects Butterville Road just beyond the overhead bridge, essentially on the other side of it from where you’ll park your vehicle). 

- Bonticou/Spring Farm

From the I-87 Thruway, get off at Exit 18 New Paltz. After the toll plaza, turn Left at the first traffic light. Drive through the village of New Paltz on Route 299 west and keep going on Rt. 299. Once out of town, just after driving past the Gilded Otter Brewery and across the green steel bridge, turn Right onto Springtown Road.  Go about ¼ mile and veer left onto Mountain Rest Road.  Go about one mile to the stop sign and continue straight across.  Continue up the hill on Mountain Rest Road and pass by the Mohonk Mountain House entrance and golf course, go under the one-lane bridge and continue straight down the steep hill.  At the base of the long hill, just as the road is about to curve sharply to the left, Turn Right onto Upper 27 Knolls Road.  The kiosk and parking area for Bonticou/Spring Farm will be ¼ mile down Upper 27 Knolls Road.

- Visitor’s Center Parking Lot

From the I-87 Thruway, get off at Exit 18 New Paltz. After the toll plaza, turn Left at the first traffic light. Drive through the village of New Paltz on Route 299 west and keep going on Rt. 299. Once out of town, drive for about 6-7 miles. Route 299 dead ends at route 44/55. Turn Right at the route 44/55 & 299 intersection (at the stop sign) onto route 44/55 and drive up the ridge. Mohonk Visitor’s Center will soon be on the right-hand side. If you go around the sharp hairpin turn you have gone too far. 

- Wawarsing Parking Lot

From the I-87 Thruway, get off at Exit 18 New Paltz. After the toll plaza, turn Left at the first traffic light. Drive through the village of New Paltz on Route 299 west and keep going on Rt. 299. Once out of town, drive for about 6-7 miles. Route 299 dead ends at route 44/55. Turn Right at the route 44/55 & 299 intersection (at the stop sign) onto route 44/55 and drive up the ridge. Pass the Mohonk Visitor’s Center on the right-hand side and very soon after you will see the Wawarsing parking lot on the right-hand side.

- West Trapps Parking Lot

From the I-87 Thruway, get off at Exit 18 New Paltz. After the toll plaza, turn Left at the first traffic light. Drive through the village of New Paltz on Route 299 west and keep going on Rt. 299. Once out of town, drive for about 6-7 miles. Route 299 dead ends at route 44/55. Turn Right at the route 44/55 & 299 intersection (at the stop sign) onto route 44/55 and drive up the ridge. Pass the Mohonk Visitor’s Center and Wawarsing parking lot on the right-hand side. Keep driving on Rt. 299, around the sharp hairpin turn and up the hill. Once you crest the ridge, and go under a steel bridge, the West Trapps parking lot will be on the Right side, a couple hundred yards down the road.

- Lost City/Coxing Parking Lot

Follow the directions above to West Trapps parking lot. Drive past the West Trapps parking lot and soon after veer right onto Clove Road.  Follow Clove Road for a couple of minutes, and turn Left into the Coxing Trailhead parking area on your left.


MINNEWASKA STATE PARK PRESERVE HIKING AREAS
Park is located at 5281 Route 44-55, Kerhonkson, NY 12446

Follow directions to the West Trapps parking lot. Drive past West Trapps parking lot, remaining on Rt. 299 for several miles to the Minnewaska State Park Preserve entrance on the Left-hand side. Before getting to the main Minnewaska State Park entrance you will pass by the Peterskill Climbing area on your right.  Turn Left into the main park, see the kiosk immediately there at the entrance. 

- Lower Parking Lot

Upon entering the park and going through the kiosk, immediately turn right and drive down the drive to park in the lot that is just off route 44/55

- Upper Parking Lot

Upon entering the park and going through the kiosk, continue straight up the long, steep, and windy road to the upper parking lot that is near Lake Minnewaska.

- Lower Parking Lot

From I-87 Thruway, get off exit 18 New Paltz.  After the toll booth turn Right onto route 299 east.  Travel for 5 miles to end/intersection at traffic light with Route 9W.  Turn Left and take route 9W north for 6 miles.  Immediately after the Esopus Fire House Station, Turn Left on Old Post Road. Lower parking lot is 0.2 miles on right.

- Upper Parking Lot

Follow driving directions to Scenic Hudson’s Shaupeneak Ridge Lower Parking Lot but do not turn into the lower parking lot.  Continue to follow Old Post Road to Poppletown Road, which splits off to the right. Upper parking area is on the left, 2.5 miles from intersection of 9W and Old Post Road. 

 

WALLKILL VALLEY RAIL TRAIL ACCESS AREAS

- Sojourner Truth Park

From the I-87 Thruway, get off at Exit 18 New Paltz. After the toll plaza, turn Left at the first traffic light. Drive through the village of New Paltz on Route 299 west and keep going on Rt. 299. Just before the metal bridge that crosses the river, turn Left onto Water Street. Follow until stop sign and continue straight but keep right onto Plains Road. The Sojourner Truth Park's parking lot will soon be on your right-hand side.

- End of Plains Road

From the I-87 Thruway, get off at Exit 18 New Paltz. After the toll plaza, turn Left at the first traffic light. Drive through the village of New Paltz on Route 299 west and keep going on Rt. 299. Just before the metal bridge that crosses the river, turn Left onto Water Street. Follow until stop sign and continue straight but keep right onto Plains Road. The Sojourner Truth Park's parking lot will soon be on your right-hand side, pass by and keep following Plains Road about 1-2 miles more until reaching a stop sign. Go straight through the stop sign and drive until the road ends. Park in front of the Rail Trail's sign post or nearby off the side of the road.

- Off State Route 32 North and Huguenot Street

From the I-87 Thruway, get off at Exit 18 New Paltz. After the toll plaza, turn Left at the first traffic light. Drive through the village of New Paltz on Route 299 west and keep going on Rt. 299. Turn Right onto route 32 north. Drive for about 2 miles and turn left into Ulster BOCES parking lot. Park to the right side and back of the building near the grassy field where there is an open parking space far from the building.
